We will cross the new Atlantic Bridge over the Panama Canal on the way to our destination, Fort San Lorenzo. Located on the west bank of the Panama Canal, Fort San Lorenzo is an outstanding example of Spanish Colonial military architecture. The construction of the structure was started in 1595 to protect the Chagres River. The Chagres River was part of the transisthmian route that connected Panama City with the Caribbean.
Fort St. Lorenzo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980 because it is a magnificent example of the defence system built by the Spanish Crown to protect transatlantic trade.
Fort St. Lorenzo offers stunning views of the Chagres River mouth and the Caribbean Sea.
After the visit to the fortification, there will be an optional stop for lunch at The Dock Restaurant located at Shelter Bay Marina.
Our next stop is at the Panama Canal Agua Clara Locks. At the visitor center, you may see the ships passing through the Canal. You will learn about its history and operation.
This full-day tour features visits to Fort San Lorenzo and the Agua Clara Locks of the Panama Canal in Colon City.
